Ganga Dussehra

Ganga Dussehra marks the divine descent (Avatran) of Maa Ganga from heaven to Earth. It is celebrated on the 10th day (Dashami) of the bright fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha (May–June).

Mythological History-

According to sacred scriptures such as the Skanda PuranaVishnu Purana, and Ramayana, the descent of Maa Ganga was made possible by the intense penance of King Bhagiratha, who meditated for thousands of years to liberate the souls of his ancestors.

Pleased with his devotion:

  • Lord Brahma released Ganga from heaven
  • Lord Shiva received her powerful flow in his matted locks to soften her descent
  • From Shiva’s locks, Maa Ganga flowed gently onto Earth

This divine event purified the Earth and granted salvation to Bhagiratha’s ancestors.

Spiritual and Religious Importance

Maa Ganga is considered the most sacred river in Sanatan Dharma, believed to:

  • Purify sins
  • Liberate souls from the cycle of birth and death
  • Bestow spiritual merit and peace

The scriptures mention that Maa Ganga flows on Earth in four sacred streams — Sita, Alaknanda, Chakshu, and Bhadra — blessing numerous pilgrimage sites along her banks.

On Ganga Dussehra:

  • Holy bathing in Ganga is considered extremely auspicious
  • Donating food, clothes, and lamps brings divine blessings
  • Participation in Ganga Aarti enhances spiritual upliftment

Celebration in Kashi

In Kashi, Ganga Dussehra is celebrated with immense devotion:

  • Maha Ganga Aarti by 11 Brahmins
  • Illumination of Ghats with earthen lamps
  • Cultural and spiritual programs
  • Large participation of devotees from India and abroad

The festival represents purity, compassion, and the eternal bond between Maa Ganga and humanity.

Spiritual Message of Both Festivals

Both Dev Deepawali and Ganga Dussehra convey timeless messages:

  • Respect for nature and rivers
  • Victory of dharma over adharma
  • Inner purification and self-realization
  • Unity, peace, and devotion

These festivals are not only religious celebrations but also reminders of our responsibility to protect Maa Ganga and preserve the spiritual heritage of Kashi.
