Akash Deep Mahotsav

According to the Skanda Purana and Padma Purana, the month of Kartik is extremely dear to Lord Vishnu, who is believed to awaken from his divine rest (Yoga Nidra) during this time. Lighting an Akash Deep during Kartik is said to be one of the most meritorious acts, granting blessings equal to performing great Yajnas.

It is believed that offering a lamp to the sky pleases Lord Vishnu, who then grants spiritual upliftment and liberation (Moksha).

2. Akash Deep and the Liberation of Ancestors

Ancient scriptures mention that the light of Akash Deep guides departed souls (Pitrs) on their journey to higher realms. The flame acts as a divine path of illumination, helping ancestors attain peace and liberation.

This belief makes Akash Deep especially significant for families seeking blessings for their lineage and ancestors.

3. Association with Maa Ganga

In Kashi, Akash Deep holds special importance due to the presence of Maa Ganga. Offering Akash Deep on the banks of the Ganga is considered far more powerful than anywhere else.

The light offered to the sky reflects in the sacred waters of the Ganga, symbolizing the union of:

  • Earth (Prithvi)
  • Water (Jal)
  • Fire (Agni)
  • Sky (Akash)

This represents cosmic balance and universal harmony.

4. Connection with Dev Deepawali

On Kartik Purnima, the culmination of the Kartik month, Akash Deep offerings reach their peak. It is believed that on this day:

  • Gods and Goddesses descend to Earth
  • They witness the illumination of Kashi
  • The Akash Deep offerings welcome divine beings

This tradition directly links Akash Deep with Dev Deepawali, enhancing its spiritual significance.

Spiritual Significance of Akash Deep

Lighting Akash Deep symbolizes:

  • Victory of light over darkness
  • Removal of ignorance and negativity
  • Dedication of one’s actions to the Divine
  • Prayer for world peace and universal harmony

Scriptures state that one Akash Deep offered with devotion during Kartik equals thousands of ordinary lamps lit at other times.

Akash Deep in Varanasi Today

In Varanasi, the tradition of Akash Deep continues with deep devotion:

  • Lamps are offered on Ghats throughout Kartik month
  • Continuous chanting of mantras accompanies the ritual
  • Devotees from India and abroad participate

Gangotri Seva Samiti plays an important role in preserving this sacred tradition by organizing Akash Deep offerings throughout the month of Kartik, ensuring that the ancient spiritual practices of Kashi remain alive and accessible to all devotees.

Akashdeep as Tribute to Martyrs

In Kashi, this ancient ritual has been beautifully expanded to honor modern heroes, especially those who have sacrificed their lives while on duty, including police officers, armed forces personnel, and public servants.

During Kartik, countless Akashdeep are lit at prominent Ghats such as Dashashwamedh Ghat as a tribute to these brave souls whose service protected the nation and its people. These lamps serve as:

  • Symbols of eternal respect and remembrance for martyrs
  • A spiritual message that their selfless service continues to inspire
  • A collective offering of light, prayer, and gratitude from the community

Gangotri Seva Samiti  organize these lamp lighting rituals in remembrance of heroes including police and PAC personnel, ensuring their memory is honored with reverence and solemn devotion.

Ceremony and Community Participation

On days dedicated to remembrance during the Kartik month:

  • Akashdeep are lit on tall bamboo stands beside the river, their flames rising toward the sky
  • Devotees, families, officers, and citizens gather in respectful silence
  • Special prayers and Vedic chants are offered for the peace and salvation of the departed souls
  • The atmosphere becomes a blend of spiritual serenity and patriotic tribute

These ceremonies not only honor ancestors and martyrs but also reinforce the timeless values of courage, sacrifice, and devotion—reminding all who witness them that the light of service and sacrifice burns forever.
